Anxiety disorders are among the most common psychiatric diagnoses and present in patients as excessive fear and worry. Many seeking care for symptoms of anxiety disorders have a chief concern other than anxiety. Because most individuals first seek treatment for anxiety disorders in primary care, it is important to screen, assess, diagnose, and potentially initiate treatment for them in these settings. If left untreated, anxiety disorders can cause significant personal, social, and occupational impairment. Elevated anxiety levels can lead to a fight-or-flight fear response. Evidence-based treatment options are available at the Bass Wellness Center.
Anxiety is a mental and physical reaction to perceived threats. In small doses, anxiety is helpful. It protects us from danger, and focuses our attention on problems. But when anxiety is too severe, or occurs too frequently, it can become debilitating.
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- PTSD affects 7.7 million adults or 3.6% of the U.S. population.
- Women are 5x more likely to be affected than men.
- Rape is the most likely trigger of PTSD: 65% of men and 45.9% of women who are raped will develop the disorder.
- Childhood sexual abuse is a strong predictor of the lifetime likelihood of developing PTSD.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- OCD affects 2.5 million adults or 1.2% of the U.S. population.
- Women are 3x more likely to be affected than men.
- The average age of onset is 19, with 25% of cases occurring by age 14. One-third of affected adults first experienced symptoms in childhood
Generalized Anxiety: An excessive amount of anxiety or worry in several areas of life, such as job responsibilities, health, finances, or minor concerns (e.g. completing housework).
Phobias: A very intense fear of a specific situation or object, which is out of proportion to its actual threat. For example, a fear of giving speeches, or of spiders, could be considered a phobia.
Panic: An extreme anxious response where a person experiences a panic attack. During a panic attack, the individual experiences numerous physical symptoms, and is overwhelmed by a feeling of dread.
