New York State has seen an alarmingly sharp increase in the amount of Substance Use Disorders in recent years. According to statistics compiled by New York State, in 2019 there were an estimated 1.4 million New Yorkers ages 12 and older who suffered from alcohol use disorder, with a rate of 6.5%. New York state also reported that 1.5% of New Yorkers aged 12 or older had suffered from drug misuse disorder in 2019. It’s clear that substance-use disorders have become increasingly prevalent in New York State and it is essential to take action towards curtailment if New Yorkers are to thrive again under healthy conditions.
Addiction is defined as a chronic, relapsing disorder characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use despite adverse consequences. It is considered a brain disorder because it involves functional changes to brain circuits involved in reward, stress, and self-control.
Suboxone is a prescription medication used in treating those addicted to Opioids, illegal or prescription. It contains the ingredients Buprenorphine and Naloxone. Buprenorphine, a partial Opioid agonist, blocks the Opiate receptors and reduces a person's urges.
Buprenorphine is an opioid agonist medication used to treat opioid addiction and drug dependence. It is a semi-synthetic opioid developed in the 1970s and is currently known by its commercial name Suboxone. Buprenorphine works by binding to opioid receptors in the brain and helping to reduce cravings. It has been approved for use as part of medication-assisted therapy (MAT) programs designed to treat opioid use disorder. At a low dose of buprenorphine it can block other opioids from attaching to the brain, making its use beneficial when co-administered with other medications intended to reduce or stop the effects of opioids. Its slow rate of release makes buprenorphine appealing for long-term treatment plans since lower doses are needed compared to other drugs for maintenance programs. Patients are generally tapered off buprenorphine under the guidance of their health care provider, as stopping “cold turkey” can cause serious side effects like withdrawal symptoms that may be life-threatening if not managed properly. In sum, buprenorphine is an effective treatment for those struggling with opioid addiction, provided it is administered via medication-assisted therapy and monitored by medical professionals
